About Helmsman

Since 2001 Helmsman has been a trusted adviser to leading private and public sector organisations in industries such as Defence, Infrastructure, Utilities, Transport, ITC and Financial Services.

By combining the client advice and support operations of Helmsman Services with the leading edge project research conducted by the Helmsman Institute, we have helped those organisations deliver some of their most complex and challenging projects.

Our vision

To create a measurable improvement of between 5% and 10% in project performance across the economy.

Our mission

To understand the fundamental drivers of project performance and create products and services that enable organisations to significantly improve project delivery.

Helmsman Institute - scientific research

The Helmsman Institute is Helmsman’s research arm. It partners with leading academic institutions, companies and public sector organizations to examine the governance and delivery of strategically, economically and politically complex programs.

Our research agenda is driven by industry and seeks to identify precisely what makes major projects succeed or fail. Our current research includes a three-year, federally funded initiative with the University Technology Sydney (UTS) to create best practice benchmarking tools for project governance.

Helmsman Services - focussed support

At Helmsman we don’t “do” projects for organisations. Instead, we help organisations build their capability and get projects on track.

Our services range from project health checks and diagnostics through to major project resets, PMO development and organisational level governance reviews.

By using practical, proven, fact-based approaches validated by the Institute’s scientific research, we root out the real issues to drive systemic and sustainable improvements.

Our people are ‘people people’ experienced professionals who can cut through the noise, identify what's important and provide real insight. They go beyond the usual considerations to cover the “soft factors” that so often drive superior performance.
